I was born in Zurich, Switzerland. I received the Diploma in mathematics in 1977 and the Ph.D. degree in computer science in 1984 both from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH), Zurich. Since 1980, I have been with IBM Zurich Research Laboratory, Zurich, where I was engaged in research on image processing, communication systems and many other fields. Shortly before my early retirement in summer 2007, I changed my focus completely and got involved with teaching. In spring 2007, I started taking a course in didactics of mathematics at the ETH and completed it successfully in fall 2010. I was teaching mathematics and physics at a college in Zurich until my retirement in July 2017.
